An artist documenting other artists - an insider with a true understanding of and love for live performance - making honest connections with the performers I work with, my aim is to capture the essence of the live show and not to simply record what happened. My documentary work is an important part of my practice and I believe in it as an art form with the recorded document often being all that is left after the event.
This series is about the transition from drag back to original self. I am fascinated by the way many artists take forever lovingly applying the drag for a performance or shoot… but cannot get it off quick enough at the end, armed with baby wipes, they return to their former self in minutes… its about post drag/show fatigue and the relationship the performers have with their drag self… It’s about time, process and the capabilities of photography; the images are made in camera recording the whole transition, the title reflects the time it took to TRANSform.
EXHIBITION COMING SOON!
The series includes images of David Hoyle, Scottee, Jonny Woo, Holestar, John Sizzle, A Man to Pet, Russella, Ginger Johnson, Myra Dubois, Bourgeois and Maurice, Sharon Husbands, Jacqui Potato, Cheryl Dole, Fagulous, Vanity Von Glow, Tom Harlow, Cherry Liquor, Babs (Legs and Coq), Titus Groan.
Portraits made with some of my favourite performers on the London drag scene.
The series 'Boy with a ... ' is based on classic paintings of girls simply titled 'girl with a... ' . It is about gender stereotypes and beauty, reflecting the desires of the photographer onto the eyes of the viewer.
Working alongside and with David over the past 5 years, we have developed a special relationship with each other and with the camera allowing me access into his world beyond the stage. The book Parallel Universe documents David Hoyle pre, during and post show, it is a celebration of his many different looks, moods and expression... It is an ongoing project at the moment with a view to publishing the book and exhibiting some of the images next year.
